BAM preferred bidder for National Graphene Institute

BAM Construction has won the job to build Manchester University's £61m research institute into the super-material graphene.

The university selected BAM as the preferred bidder for the £30m design-and-build construction contract.

BAM's win follows its appointment to other high-profile jobs in Manchester, including the Co-operative Group's One Angel Square headquarters and Manchester City FC's new academy.

The National Graphene Institute, designed by architect Jestico + Whiles, will be dedicated to finding commercial uses for graphene.

The material is one atom thick but 200 times stronger than steel, the strongest, thinnest and most conductive material ever measured.

Located at the main university campus on Booth Street East, the NGI will be housed within a 81,600 sq ft five-storey building.

The project team includes EC Harris as lead consultant on the research hub, with CH2M Hill providing specialist architectural laboratory design and M&E consultant services and Ramboll as civil and structural engineer.

Work is set to start on site later this year with completion in 2015.
