Architect wins Frodsham goods shed project
Manchester practice Lewis & Hickey has been appointed to convert a derelict goods shed at Frodsham railway station, Cheshire, into a creative studio space.
Frodsham Foundation, the social enterprise overseeing the scheme, launched the Make Space competition in October 2014 and invited architects from across the North West to submit concepts for the shed. The designs needed to include affordable studio and retail units, space for film screenings, business presentations, workshops and events, and a music rehearsal, recording and filming studio.
Lewis & Hickey was one of three practices shortlisted for the project, and won a public vote for the best design. The plans will see a two-storey extension to the warehouse, with the main body of the building for community and small business use.
Frodsham Foundation has been awarded a pre-feasibility grant of up to £10,000 by Social Investment Business. The grant will be used for the first phase of architectural fees, structural surveys, valuation, development of governance and structure and preparation of the next stage of funding applications.
An application will be made to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a heritage enterprise grant on 5 February 2015.
