Amazon signs for Airport City shed

The e-commerce giant has agreed to take a 654,000 sq ft warehouse surrounded by a 120,000 sq ft car park at Airport City Manchester’s Wythenshawe site.

A 260,000 sq ft warehouse by Mountpark Logistics and Stoford Property is currently under construction at the site, but will now be extended internally with mezzanine floors to increase the size to 654,000 sq ft. The facility will also include a 42,800 sq ft office.

Airport City’s £100m global logistics site has outline planning permission for the development of 1.4m sq ft of logistics space and 36.6-acres of landscaping, granted by the local authority in November 2012.

HOW Planning submitted the revised application on behalf of Stoford. Webb Gray & Partners were the architect.

Amazon was previously linked with a Stoford site in 2013, when the developer was close to agreeing a 1.2m sq ft deal for a storage and distribution unit in Croxteth. The scheme was delayed due to rising site costs, and Amazon was rumoured to be looking at smaller units of between 100,000 sq ft and 500,000 sq ft.

Stoford is also on site with a 130,000 sq ft logistics facility at Airport City which will offer units of between 17,500 sq ft and 35,000 sq ft to meet demand for small-to-medium sized logistics units.

Jonathan Haigh, director of development management and infrastructure at MAG Property, said: “This deal marks a major milestone for Airport City and creates 1,500 new local jobs, which is exciting news.

“Manchester Airport’s network of flights to destinations around the globe is one of the key things that makes Airport City attractive to businesses looking to relocate or set up new bases in the UK.

“This deal provides clear evidence of that and also gives Amazon close access to both their supply chain and the 22m potential customers within a two hour drive of Manchester Airport.

“We look forward to welcoming them to the development.”

didn’t mayor joe rip up a development plan for croxteth to entice Amazon? what’s happening now?

I’m guessing whoever signed this off at Amazon didn’t catch all the M56 disaster stories this year?

Given the location of this warehouse is next to a new DHL warehouse and the relatively small footprint of this building. I am guessing this deal is for Amazon Logistics rather than a larger distribution warehouse. Amazon has launched same day deliveries in a number of UK cities not currently available in the North West. The M56 may indeed be a nightmare but if you want to deliver into Manchester there aren’t that many other options.
