Allied London lodges plans for Manchester food hall

The developer’s Shipyard scheme will see Albert Shed on the corner of New Quay Street and Water Street converted into a riverside dining destination.

Having first announced plans for the venue in 2019, Allied London has now submitted a planning application for the 30,000 sq ft food hall project.

Designed by 3D Reid, the plan is to repurpose the former warehouse into “an eclectic and curated destination that compliments the wider St John’s masterplan by encouraging a mix of artisan vendors and rolling smaller stalls”, according to the architect’s design and access statement.

Precedents for the project cited by the architect include Kyiv Food Market, located within a former arsenal, Time Out Market in Lisbon, and Mackie Mayor in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

To learn more about the scheme, search for reference number 136041/FO/2023 on Manchester City Council’s planning portal.

Shipyard forms part of the ongoing regeneration of Manchester’s St John’s district.

Other developments in the area include the £210m arts venue Factory International, and Manchester Goods Yard, a 350,000 sq ft office complex let to Booking.com, Cloud Imperium, and Peak AI.

Construction is also underway on a pair of co-living towers, developed by Vita Group. Once complete, they will provide more than 750 residential units.

In addition, the former Granada Studios is being converted into a Mollies Hotel and Diner. Work on that project is due to complete this year.

Looks great ! Great mix of establishments/venues coming to this area

Good luck, the existing halls are all struggling now

By DH

Great use for this site I am sure it will be a great success

Why food halls and not nightclubs?.Is that really what the mostly young population Manchester wants or is it what some middle aged property executive wants?.

@SH says who? Love this proposal, especially as the riverside is being opened up.

Food hall over kill!
Everyone is opening these all over the shop, they’ll all be crying in a couple of years when they fail.

No better place for them, lots of food halls but with such growth in the city centre population they will undoubtedly thrive in the long term.

Please make it like Time Out Market in Lisbon or Marché des Enfants Rouges in Paris, such amazing places.

Less than a year ago this was meant to be a Boxpark, wonder what happened.

@Anonymous nightclubs aren’t the money making machines they were (especially with WHP contracts knocking around…)

The old Albion market set.

@Dave, I might have agreed with you had you said it sounds great, but that CGI rendered images has to be one of the worst and least informative images since the days of the Sinclar ZX81!

Too many food halls opening up, reminds me of the burger boom restaurant phase. Hopefully the city can support these food halls.

This looks great, right on the river too, looks very similar to the food hall in Lewes, Sussex, next to the river Ouse on Cliffe High Street.

Great. This part of the city needs more life/vibrancy, with visitors coming to The Factory. Won’t this impact the viability of the food hall fans near Campfield, just round the corner?

Boxparks are nothing special, shipping containers with food vendors. Bruntwood is already doing this in Oxford road.

I’m personally not a great fan of the food hall concept, but there is no doubt that there will be a market to support such as development. Major attractions like the Science and Industry Museum and Factory International, hundreds of thousands of square feet of new office occupiers and lots of residential coming on stream (not just the Vita scheme).

I sometimes forget just how much development is going on around St John’s. This should be a great success long term because of the location.

We need something more “up market” (not “high end”) than BoxPark.

There is definitely a need for this sort of venue with all the high density housing being created in the city. Bring it on!

Food halls are great when meeting mates as everyone can get whatever food they want, however I think we’re on the brink of too many food halls

By Karl

This is a fantastic addition to the City.
Everyone commenting doom and gloom about the opening of this need to remember it’s being opened on the same street of The Factory. They wont have any trouble with footfall.
