Alliance Manchester Business School wins Building of the Year

Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce has named the Alliance Manchester Business School as the winner of its 2019 Building of the Year Award.

The £85m AMBS, which opened in June, was built around the original steel frame and now provides educational facilities including two lecture theatres, a library, enterprise centres, breakout spaces and cafés.

The project is part of a 10-year £1bn estates renewal programme by the University of Manchester. It was delivered with development and project manager Bruntwood. The architect was BDP for the school while Leach Rhodes Walker provided the designs for the accompanying hotel. Mace was the construction manager.

The AMBS beat four other finalists for the Building of the Year Award: The Pavilion in Spinningfields, city centre office Windmill Green, Ashton’s Tameside One, and Roof Gardens in Castlefield.

Chairman of the GMCC Phil Cusack, announced the nominees and winner at a dinner yesterday evening, commended all of the schemes and said “it was a really close call”

“The judges felt unanimously that with this building, Manchester was making a statement about its dedication to education.

“The school is now positioned as the leading of its type in Europe, and possibly the world. The original building was out of touch with the 21st century but the redevelopment has firmly placed it to rub shoulders with the best institutions around the globe.”

Previous winners include The Christie Proton Beam Therapy Centre, Oldham Town Hall, Maggie’s at The Christie, and The Whitworth Art Gallery.
