Aldi to arrive in Tarleton after planning delay

A 26,000 sq ft supermarket is to be built on the site of the former Bay Leaf Indian restaurant off Liverpool Road after the housing secretary decided not to call in the application.

West Lancashire Council referred the decision to Government due to its size and the fact that the development was deemed to “constitute inappropriate development in the Green Belt” however, the housing secretary subsequently ruled that the final decision on the project should be taken by the local authority.

The plans, first submitted in November 2018, have now been approved.

Alongside the foodstore, a 7,000 sq ft, two-storey office block is being built for logistics firm GBA Services which is expanding from its current premises on Moss Lane in Tarleton.

The development will also provide parking for 138 cars.

Avison Young is acting as the planner for the scheme, The Harris Partnership is architect and Vector is landscape architect.

Lauren Neary, planning consultant for Avison Young, said: “We believe this is an important development in Tarleton.

“The site represents a significant investment by Aldi into the area and will vastly improve the retail offer for the local community, reducing travel times and improving shopping choice.

“The development provides the opportunity to transform this currently underutilised site back into an economically active use and will provide Tarleton with social, economic and environmental benefits both directly and indirectly through the scheme.”
