Aldi eyes latest Manchester store

The discount supermarket giant wants to demolish the Imperial Lounge restaurant in Moston and build a 20,000 sq ft shop.

Aldi proposes creating its latest Manchester store on the two-acre Victoria Avenue East site, along with a 119-space customer car park. The scheme is part of the German retailer’s plan to open another 100 stores in England by 2023.

The development site is located between an apartment block and North Manchester Rugby Club.

The Indian restaurant that currently occupies the site “no longer represents a viable use for the building”, according to planning consultant Avison Young. The restaurant’s owners are looking at relocation options.

The Harris Partnership is the architect behind the scheme and Vector is advising Aldi on its landscape proposals

Subject to planning approval, the store could open before the end of 2023.

The overall investment value of the development will be in excess of £5m, according to Avison Young.

Aldi eye another independent business to put out of business. Imperial lounge is by far the best Southern Asian restaurant in the area.
