Affordable homes mapped for Kirkby Project site

Developer Engie Regeneration has secured consent for 266 homes across 16 acres at the former sports centre off Whitefield Drive, once tipped to house a 50,000-capacity stadium for Everton FC.

The homes will be a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom properties. A total of 221 homes will be available on affordable rent or shared ownership and the remaining 17 will be available for private rent. Housing association Your Housing Group will manage the affordable properties.

The site has been allocated for residential development under Knowsley’s local plan since 2006. In 2009, a hybrid planning application for an extensive mixed-use scheme, including a new stadium for Everton football club, known as The Kirkby Project, was refused.

As well as the stadium, the plans, lodged by supermarket giant Tesco, included offices and a hotel, but this scheme was refused.

Iceni Projects is the planning consultant for Engie’s development, which was designed by architect Eden Building Design.

It has been a successful week for Engie, which also won permission for 268 homes in Winsford.
