Mill Farm goes before DCLG

The £18m Mill Farm Sports Village development has been referred to the Secretary of State for consideration this week, following an agreement with Fylde Council on legal aspects and financial contributions.

The scheme on a 31-acre site in Wesham, Lancashire, received planning permission in June and was recommended to go before Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government, due to the scale of the development. The plans include a 6,000-seater football ground to become home to AFC Fylde, 60-bed hotel and Aldi store.

Preston-based consultant PWA Planning worked with local architect Frank Whittle Partnership in the submission and management of the planning application.

The project is being developed by Mill Farm Ventures, which was formed by AFC Fylde chairman David Haythornthwaite in order to put forward the development proposals. AFC Fylde is currently based in Warton.

The name of the contractor is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

James French, chief executive of Mill Farm Ventures, said: "Our supporters and in fact most of the people in the local area – an independent survey in May 2014 showed 68% were in favour of the development – want this development to start as soon as possible. Not only will the scheme bring a new home for AFC Fylde but also amongst other things a new Aldi store, petrol station, restaurants and a hotel. People are really excited about this as currently they have little or no choice at the moment than to drive long distances for basic necessities."
