GMC acquires former CMP Batteries warehouse

Greater Manchester Collections has completed the acquisition of the former CMP Batteries Exide site on Salford Road in Over Hulton, Bolton, for an undisclosed sum.

The property comprises a former manufacturing and distribution facility extending to 260,000 sq ft.

The 19.9 acre site is situated in close proximity to Junction 4 of the M61 motorway and adjacent to the 1,000 acre Cutacre site which is proposed to come forward as a possible major employment site.

John Lafferty, King Sturge, who acted on behalf of Greater Manchester Collections, said: "The purchase of the site presents GMC with the opportunity to provide and further improve waste disposal services for Bolton and neighbouring local councils on land adjacent to a new In Vessel Composting facility, construction of which commences on site later this year. However, the sites location, motorway links and proximity to the proposed Cutacre development will also prove attractive to traditional industrial and office occupiers. CMP are to remain in occupation of part of the building for 12 months allowing GMC to finalise development proposals for the site."

The proposed In Vessel Composting (IVC) facility will treat garden and kitchen waste in enclosed buildings by accelerating the decomposition process and is part of a £631m investment programme which aims to provide sustainable waste disposal arrangements for the conurbation.

GMC are in negotiation with the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority about using the site as a new waste recycling centre but will make a final decision following a strategic review of their existing facilities in June. Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority has responsibility for dealing with 1.1m tonnes of waste produced each year in is England.

GMC was provided with legal advice by DWF. The vendor was advised by GVA and Cobbetts.
