Bus data release marks UK first

30 Jul 2010, 13:51

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive has made the data used to produce bus timetables freely available in so-called open source form for programmers to be able to manipulate into their own online tools or to make apps for downloading onto iPhones.

Manchester is believed to be the first city in the UK to do so. The move by GMPTE, supported by quango Manchester Knowledge Capital, follows a campaign by groups such as Future Everything and Open Data Manchester.

Julian Tait of FutureEverything told tech magazine The Next Web: "I think that GMPTE want to see what people will come up with the data and are hoping to release more when they are able. This is a big step for them."
