Contractor invites Envirolink to gauge streetscape work

National civil engineering contractor, North Midland Construction, has enlisted Envirolink Northwest's support for public realm projects in Liverpool city centre.

NMC is carrying out several projects under a framework with Liverpool City Council and wants to achieve a CEEQUAL (The Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Award Scheme) grade of 'excellent' for the work to ratify its environmental commitment.

The firm will be opening up its practices to independent verification of not only its environmental, but also its corporate social responsibility performance.

Geoff Poyzer, operations director, NMC, said: "We have confidence in our environmental and social performance and welcome this opportunity to have this demonstrated by external verification. Envirolink Northwest's assistance with this process will be invaluable."

The first of these schemes to be awarded to NMC under the framework involves public realm enhancement works in Liverpool along Mount Pleasant, Rodney Street, Clarence Street and Oxford Street.

The works involve relaying existing Yorkstone flags, and laying new granite paving and curbs of 15,000 sq m. Construction work recently began on site and NMC has already identified 1,000 tonnes of paving stones due to be removed from site that can be recycled rather than discarded.

Some of these re-usable materials will be made available to charitable organisations and given away free of charge in an effort to support local community projects, part of NMC's devotion to having a positive impact on the local community. Additional slabs will be sent to a recycling facility and processed for re-use within the framework as type 1 aggregate.
