Langtree to begin Saints stadium 'within weeks'
19 Mar 2010, 08:25
Four companies are vying to secure the tender to construct the £20m stadium on the former United Glass site at Peasley Cross.
The development includes a 17,800-capacity stadium alongside a 140,000 sq ft Tesco store. Once a contractor is appointed demolition work will begin on the industrial site. If all goes to plan, this could start within weeks.
Martin Mellor, director at Langtree, said: "We always knew that going through the tender documents would be a big job. There is that much to go through and the last six weeks have been very intense. But we are going in the right direction."
Saints' ambition is to move into a new home by May 2011. If demolition and groundwork begin later this month it will give developers a 14-month period to get the stadium ready.
The club announced last year that 2010 will be their final season at Knowsley Road's GPW Recruitment stadium.
