TMP celebrates award for waterfront scheme

The Mersey Partnership, the tourist board for the Liverpool city region, is celebrating after one of its schemes won a British Urban Regeneration Association Waterways Renaissance award.

Managed by TMP, the Mersey Waterfront's 'pride in our promenades' won the 'partnership' award at a ceremony held at the Lowry in Salford Quays last night.

Lorraine Rogers, chief executive of The Mersey Partnership, said: "These prestigious awards celebrate best practice in urban regeneration and development, in particular effective engagement with communities.

"The regeneration of Liverpool's waterfront is one of the region's key success stories and the Mersey Waterfront programme in particular has made a real difference in enhancing this important asset for the region."

Sara Wilde, chair of Mersey Waterfront, added: "Pride in our promenades was all about breathing new life into the coastline and creating better public access to urban waterfront locations. This has been achieved by working closely with our partners and engaging with local residents through Mersey Waterfront's community activities and people's panels."

The Mersey Waterfront programme aims at regenerating the city region's 145km coastline and is funded through the North West Development Agency and European Regional Development Fund.

The 'pride in our promenades' initiative was recognised for enhancing public access to the region's waterfront, as well as revitalising the promenades along the coastline.

Schemes within the Mersey Waterfront programme have included:

Otterspool Promenade and Dingle Esplanade in Liverpool
Egremont Promenade in Wirral
Leeds & Liverpool Canal Corridor through to south Sefton and north Liverpool

Improvements were tailored to each scheme and included surfacing, seating, planting, play facilities, fitness trails, artwork, signage and interpretation.

The nominations were judged by an independent assessment panel, comprising waterway, conservation and regeneration experts and chaired by Sir Peter Soulsby.

The Waterways Renaissance awards are run by The Waterways Trust and British Urban Regeneration Association and aim to recognise best practice in sustainable waterway regeneration and development throughout the UK.
