Bury carnival ready to celebrate town

Voluntary organisation Bury Lions Club will be staging its annual parade and gala during the summer and are inviting people to take part.

A Rio street band and a fleet of non-commercial cars are some of the highlights of this year's Bury Lions Carnival, due to take place in June.

Bury town centre is currently undergoing transformation with the £80m Ask and Bury council Townside development and The Rock, a 1.6m sq ft retail, leisure and residential scheme costing £350m, both expected to be complete within the next twelve months.

Scott Richardson, chairman of the Bury Lions Carnival, said: "Bury has hosted an annual carnival for over 100 years, and we're hoping to make our 2010 celebration the best yet. For a small fee anyone can come and take part in either the gala or the parade, for which we have some breathtaking floats that should not be missed."

The parade will start at 11am on Saturday 12 June in Market Street and will feature an acrobatic centre-piece. The organisers have said cost for non-commercial vehicles is £10 and £20 for commercial. Vehicles of any description are permitted as long as they are road legal and correctly insured.

Stalls for displays and exhibitions at the gala, located in Trinity Street car park and Market Street, are priced at £10 for non-commercial organisations and £20 for commercial. Throughout the day the gala site will have stalls, displays, dancing, and a children's funfair.

The carnival will have a 'Made in Bury' theme, part of a campaign launched last year which has had support from local celebrities including award-winning director Danny Boyle, rock band Elbow, and gold medal-winning paralympic athlete Zoe Robinson.
