Merepark tweaks Central Village plans

Developer Merepark has been granted consents on revised applications relating to its long-awaited Central Village mixed-use scheme in Liverpool.

The latest consents from Liverpool City Council allow for 23,000 sq ft of retail to be added above existing stores in Central Station's precinct and the reduction of residential towers from 320 to 214 units.

Earlier this week, department store Lewis's said it was closing due to poor trading. The building will be redeveloped and a new pedestrian flow established from Renshaw Street into a plaza (pictured) under Merepark's plans.

Merepark, based in Cheshire, plans an extensive retail and leisure-led scheme on former Network Rail land behind Central Station. Deals have already been agreed with Millennium & Copthorne to operate two hotels and QPark to run the 455-space car park. Work was originally due to start in 2007.

The developer declined to comment.

'department store Lewis's said it was closing due to poor trading', wrong, they said it was because their lease is up in June and they couldn't trade whilst the building was developed!…

No more excuses Merepark. People are starting to utter the M word in the way they used to refer to Bill Davies and his Walton Group here in Liverpool. No more applications. No more shiny pictures. Time to deliver. …

This is all starting to smell badly. Absolute disgrace if this does not go ahead especially after putting all these people out of work. They should come clean about their intentions.…
