Nationwide: Carlisle/Liverpool ‘hot’ for house prices

Carlisle is still the 'hottest' regional town or city in the UK by house price according to Nationwide building society's latest research.

The Cumbrian capital reported a rise in house prices of 8% for September compared to the same month in 2008, to an average of £140,694.

Liverpool was ranked the third 'hottest' regional town or city with an annual change of -2% and average house price of £170,485.

However, Nationwide's research has shown house prices rose in all regions during the third quarter of the year.

Martin Gahbauer, Nationwide's chief economist, said: "Within England, the East and West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humberside saw weaker growth in the quarter, and along with the North and North West, have weaker annual rates of change than southern England."

Elsewhere in the North West, areas are generally seeing the annual price falls shrink as month-on-month rises take effect.

Manchester saw an annual change for quarter three of -6% compared to -10% in quarter two of 2009. Lancashire has seen falls dropping 8% from -16% to -8% this quarter.
