Willmott Dixon lands latest Liverpool school

8 Mar 2013, 09:27

Willmott Dixon has won the contract to build a £17m secondary school for Liverpool City Council as part of the local authority's ongoing programme to rescue projects that stalled when Building Schools for the Future collapsed in 2010.

The new Archbishop Beck school designed by Sheppard Robson and engineered by Mouchel will be built on the former Long Lane council depot in Fazakerley, which the authority said has better access and is less constrained than the existing site in Walton.

The school will feature a solar panelled roof to generate electricity, basketball courts, a theatre and recording and dance studios.

So far the council has found alternative funding to progress a dozen of the 25 stalled BSF projects in the city.

Providing planning permission is granted later this month, work will start in the summer and the school is set to be completed in time for September 2014.

Willmott Dixon is also building the new Notre Dame Catholic College in Everton, again designed by Sheppard Robson, set to open in September 2013.

James Jones, design director at Sheppard Robson, commented: "Having recently started on site with Notre Dame Catholic College with Willmott Dixon, Sheppard Robson is pleased to be working on this next project, using the Liverpool model school to demonstrate value for money with the highest educational standards."

Funding is also confirmed for the following schools:

  • Archbishop Blanch C of E High School
  • Holly Lodge Girls' College
  • St Francis Xavier's College
  • St Hilda's C of E High School
  • St John Bosco Arts College
  • St Julie's Catholic High School
  • Redbridge High School
  • Aigburth High School
  • Palmerston Special School
  • Abbots Lea Special School
