Work underway on new GM fire stations

Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service is on track to complete new fire stations in Bury and Rochdale by the end of this year.

Building work on the £1.6m Bury Community Fire Station is underway and expected to be completed by summer while the land is being levelled at the Rochdale site with work due to start in April and due for completion at the end of the year.

Both were designed to achieve BREEAM 'excellent' accreditation for their green credentials.

Tim Cheshire, estates manager for GMFRS, will be speaking at Greenbuild Expo in Manchester in May about the project.

The projects were driven by a need to meet response times and the changing demographics of the region. The current buildings are old and the towns have since developed around them. The new Rochdale Community Fire Station will be located in Halifax Road and aims to better meet the communities' needs than the outdated facilities it will replace at McClure Road. Bury's new fire station will be on Chamberhall Business Park, replacing the facilities at The Rock.

Both projects were awarded to Manchester-based Kier Construction and architects Bradshaw Gass & Hope. The design includes energy efficient heating systems, rainwater recycling systems to flush toilets, photovoltaic panels to generate electricity, solar collectors to provide hot water and high levels of insulation.

Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service was awarded 'very good' BREEAM for its new station in Ashton under Lyne, the first fire station in the country to be awarded BREEAM.

Tim Cheshire will be speaking at Greenbuild Expo in Manchester on Thursday 10 May at 2.30pm.
