Mersey Tidal

To support the growth of our region we need to ensure that we have energy security while reducing the level of carbon dioxide emissions, which contribute to climate change, writes Nick Hopwood, environment manager, the Environment Agency.

The Environment Agency supports new technologies, such as tidal power, which could play an important role in reaching renewable energy targets, so long as any other environmental impacts are acceptable.

These other environmental impacts are caused by changes in water levels and flows. Early engagement with organisations like the Environment Agency is essential to ensure we develop the right options, in the right places.

We are currently working closely with Peel Energy and the North West Development Agency to develop options around the possibility of a Mersey tidal scheme, with the potential to generate, enough electricity to supply up to 700,000 homes and save over 500,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

So what is the tidal debate, why is it not just a yes and now?

Technology and scheme - Much of the technology is still relatively new, and we are learning more all the time. An assessment needs to be made of what kind of tidal scheme is appropriate - should it be a barrage, a tidal fence or some other technology? Each will have a different energy capacity and impact on the river and the environment.

Positioning - where is the optimum for energy production while also considering other river users e.g. commercial shipping and recreational activities?

Environmental impacts - apart from potential changes to habitat along the estuary, the scheme may decrease or increase flood risk, may impact water quality and availability, and the ability for fish to migrate upstream.

Economic impacts - How many jobs will the scheme create, how much of the regions energy could it produce?

The Environment Agency is working with Peel Energy and other stakeholders to ensure these kinds of issues are identified, during the various phases of the project and to help develop plans to overcome them if possible.

Currently, the Mersey is the subject of detailed study, promoted by Peel Holdings with support from NWDA. For more information on the Mersey Tidal scheme visit http://www.merseytidalpower.co.uk/
