Kingsland Wines
Kingsland Wines' use of the Port of Liverpool and the barge service along the Manchester Ship Canal recently passed a key milestone as over one million kilometres of road transport along the major arterial road network have been saved.
Kingsland is the largest independent bottler of wine and spirits in the UK and supplies retail giant Tesco.
Tesco was among the first retailers to go green and move cargo via barge rather than truck; using the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal. Through using the deep water Port of Liverpool, combined with the barge along the ship canal, the project has now saved over 1m KM when compared to the traditional alternative offered by the south coast ports. In addition to increasing flexibility and reducing the impact of congestion, this solution has removed in excess of 1,300 tonnes of CO2 that would have otherwise been pumped into the atmosphere.
The barge service, operated by Peel Ports along the Manchester Ship Canal, is a regular service capable of carrying up to 160 containers and taking cargo some 40 miles inland and offers an environmentally friendly alternative to moving goods by road.
