Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority

"The GMWDA is often contacted by community groups and individuals who want to take bikes from our household waste recycling centres, for health and safety reasons we cannot allow that to happen.

However we do want to help, we want to get Greater Manchester residents to think about donating their unwanted bike for re-use instead of thinking about it as waste.

There are numerous Bike Reuse projects in Greater Manchester that will take unwanted bikes, bikes that cannot be fixed will be stripped of their usable parts and then sold on as scrap. Many projects work with young people who benefit from getting a free bike as well as learning new skills and responsibilities.

During Bike Week, 19-27 June, we are working with local councils and Bike Reuse projects across Greater Manchester to promote our Bike Reuse campaign. We will be supporting district events with bike donations points, giveaways and information about our new Bike Reuse project directory.

The directory will make it easier for residents to find out where their unwanted bike can be reused. The directory will be available on the recycle for Greater Manchester website at http://www.recycleforgreatermanchester.com/

It will go live on the first day of bike week and will help residents find their local project by putting in their home postcode. Look out for the GMWDA at your local bike week event."
