2008 Abito, Greengate, Salford
The client, Ask Developments: Abito, Greengate is a cost-effective method of providing affordable housing. The flats, diminutive in size at only 33sq m, are ideal compact living solutions for first-time buyers, young professionals and key workers.
BDP became involved with the Abito project following our request for the studio to carry out a feasibility study into micro-flat design. BDP came up with a housing concept that had not existed before, which they delivered with conviction and care for Ask.
The brief to BDP, as not only architects but also interior designers and acoustic consultants, was to deliver a high quality design on a budget and to innovate and test assumptions.
The concept of Abito was, and still is, unique, and working closely with BDP was an exciting and rewarding time for both companies.
Abito was completed within budget and on time and has proved to be one of Manchester's most successful residential developments. This Japanese-inspired design resulted in a high-density but low-cost product. We kept the development low-cost without compromising on style or quality.
The judges: Abito Apartments is an innovative and interesting project that has been delivered with conviction and care.
